For most of us, a toothbrush is commonplace. But in some parts of the world, toothbrushes are a luxury. Many boys and girls have never owned one. Your children can help bring a smile to the faces of these kids and improve their dental health. Smile Squared sends toothbrushes to children around the globe who can’t afford them. Since November 2011, they’ve given out more than 7,500 toothbrushes. They partner with organizations that can distribute the toothbrushes on the ground.

Buckner International provides these toothbrushes to orphans in many countries, including the United States. The International Justice Mission includes these toothbrushes in aftercare kits given to children rescued from trafficking. Save Their Smiles distributes them through their dental health clinics in Central and South America.

What’s so special about these toothbrushes? They’re not plastic. The handles are made from bamboo, a grass that is a renewable resource. The handles, bristles, and packaging are biodegradable and can be recycled. These toothbrushes won’t add to the 50 million pounds of toothbrushes clogging landfills in the United States or enlarge garbage dumps in communities around the world.

What’s fun for your kids? Smile Squared uses the one-for-one model — when your kids purchase one toothbrush for $5.95, a second one is automatically donated to a child who needs one. Just in case teachers and parents want to join in, Smile Squared sells adult toothbrushes as well. Jesus encourages us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31b) What a concrete way to obey this command and teach kids that we are blessed to be a blessing!
